  1. Main Preparatory Reading 1 item
At a minimum, we would like you to prepare for your degree programme in LSE Philosophy by reading one book: The Philosophers Toolkit, by Julian Baggini and Peter S. Fosl. All the other books below are optional; you are free to peruse them at your leisure to get an idea for the kinds of topics that you will have the opportunity to cover. But please do read The Philosopher's Toolkit. It is available in paperback or as an ebook for under £12 on Amazon, and is some of the best preparation you can do.
  2. Many students coming to do MSc studies in our department have little philosophy background, or have extensive background but in a different philosophical tradition (e.g. Continental philosophy). Sometimes it is difficult for such students to make the transition to studying philosophy at an advanced level, in the Anglo-American analytical tradition. As with any other potential difficulty, you should consult teachers or your academic advisor for guidance if this may apply to you. But we can also recommend the following books that may help you settle into philosophy at LSE.
